MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Europe’s Stop on the WSL Championship Tour
The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal returns to Peniche from 16 to 25 October 2026, bringing the world’s best surfers to Praia de Supertubos for the only European stop on the WSL Championship Tour, the elite level of professional surfing.
About the Event
Contested at Supertubos since 2009, the event takes its name from a wave nicknamed the “European Pipeline”: a heavy, barrelling left and right that breaks over a shallow sandbar close to shore, admired and feared in equal measure by the tour’s top surfers. Mick Fanning won the very first edition in 2009, the same year he went on to claim his second world title; Kelly Slater took the trophy on his way to a historic 10th world title; and in 2019, Italo Ferreira won in Peniche before securing his maiden world championship. The Championship Tour runs on a waiting period rather than fixed daily heats, so the exact competition days depend on swell and conditions during the window.
Practical Information
The 2026 waiting period runs from 16 to 25 October, in and around the fishing town of Peniche, on the Silver Coast, around 90 minutes from Lisbon. Supertubos beach is a short walk from the town centre, and the event draws large crowds along the dunes and boardwalk on the best swell days, with free public access to the beach.
