A Brief History of NOS Alive
The festival was born in 2007, when the promoter Everything Is New launched its first edition under the name Oeiras Alive!, with Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins and the Beastie Boys headlining on just two stages. The name itself is a tribute to the Pearl Jam song “Alive.” From its second year, the festival moved to its now-signature July date and took on a series of naming sponsors, first Optimus Alive! from 2008 to 2013, then NOS Alive from 2014 onward, after the telecoms company NOS acquired Optimus.
The festival has kept its home at the Passeio Marítimo de Algés throughout its history, growing from a two-stage event capped at 40,000 people a day into a multi-stage riverside festival now drawing crowds of over 50,000 daily. Its lineups have featured some of the biggest names in music, including Metallica, Coldplay, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Dua Lipa, The Weeknd and Foo Fighters.
The Festival Today
NOS Alive now runs across three days each July, spread over eight stages that cover everything from rock and pop to electronic music, fado and stand-up comedy. Beyond the music, the festival is known for its urban art installations, where artists create original pieces from recycled materials, and for a riverside setting that makes it one of the most scenic festival experiences in Europe.
