Founded in 1984 by Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão as part of the Gulbenkian Foundation’s ACARTE programme, Jazz em Agosto 2026, in its 42nd edition, still shows the multiple identities of jazz, a more unusual program than what is offered at the main international festivals. True to its founding spirit, the festival has built a reputation for booking free jazz, improvisation and experimental acts that rarely appear on Portugal’s other stages, with concerts held in the Foundation’s amphitheatre and gardens in central Lisbon. The 2026 edition ran from 31 July to 9 August; the 43rd edition is expected in 2027, with dates to be announced by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
