Colares in Sintra

Colares in Sintra

Our Colares Tour: Wine, Coast, and Sintra’s Hidden Charm

Colares is a small Portuguese village nestled between Sintra, the Sintra Hills, and some of the region’s best-known beaches, such as Azenhas do Mar and Praia das Maçãs.

Not only does Colares enjoy the Serra de Sintra as its backdrop, but it also blends beautifully with the surrounding nature, where vineyards dominate the landscape. This Portuguese parish is internationally recognized for its wine, produced from grapes grown in rare phylloxera-free sandy soils, a natural condition that has allowed the local Ramisco grape to remain ungrafted since before the 19th-century phylloxera epidemic that devastated most of Europe’s vineyards. A visit to the Adega Regional de Colares, one of Portugal’s oldest wine cooperatives, founded in 1908, is an unmissable stop. Both the red (Ramisco) and white (Malvasia de Colares) wines are a true delight for any wine enthusiast.

The village’s traditional houses and quintas will take you on a journey through time, alongside charming chapels and the historic pillory of Colares. Its quiet streets invite pleasant, refreshing walks, often accompanied by distant views toward Pena Palace.
