Lisbon Downtown: the Grand Square and Bohemian Heart

Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, sits in Lisbon’s downtown and is one of the largest squares in Europe, covering roughly 36,000 square meters. This riverfront square was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, on the site where the old Ribeira Royal Palace once stood, as part of the ambitious reconstruction plan led by the Marquis of Pombal.

Today, it features the striking Arco da Rua Augusta, a triumphal arch completed in 1873, elegant 18th-century arcades, and the majestic equestrian statue of Dom José I, sculpted by Joaquim Machado de Castro and inaugurated in 1775, the first equestrian monument ever made in Portugal.

On this Amiroad tour, we’ll also take you to one of Lisbon’s most cosmopolitan neighborhoods, Chiado. Located between Praça do Comércio and Bairro Alto, Chiado is known for its bohemian nightlife and its long-standing reputation as Lisbon’s intellectual and literary quarter. With its elegant streets, historic theaters, hotels, and stores, Chiado blends 19th-century elegance with a distinctly modernist spirit, and remains one of the most characteristic and beloved areas of the city.
