Proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, Jerónimos Monastery is one of Lisbon’s most visited landmarks. King Manuel I ordered its construction in 1501, on the site of a hermitage linked to Prince Henry the Navigator, to give thanks for Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India. Funded largely by taxes on the spice trade, the monastery took over a century to complete and stands today as one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture in Portugal.
In the 19th century, the church became a resting place for national heroes, including navigator Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões, whose tombs still lie near the entrance.
Located in Belém, right by the Tagus River and just a short walk from Belém Tower, the monastery is an essential stop on any Lisbon itinerary.
