Christ the King Shrine and Monument
When you get to the other side of River Tagus, there’s like a new whole world to discover, and Christ the King Monument opens its doors to it. Also known as Cristo Rei, is one of the most iconic monuments of the city, as well of Portugal. High above the river, with its more than 80m tall and its arms wide open to the city since the fifties. From here you can overlook almost all River Tagus estuary, the bridge (our kind of golden gate bridge), and the whole Lisbon city. The views are just stunning, trust us! The statue built in thanks to God for having spared Portugal, from WW II, and it was, obviously inspired by Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro. As in Rio, you can travel to the top of the Lisbon statue in an elevator and experience some of the best views of the city from the other side of the river. It is inspiring for some, but for others is also seen as a symbol of dictatorship, anyway, no one is indifferent to Christ the King.
