Cromlech of Almendres
Cromlech of Almendres is a megalithic complex near Évora. Almost one hundred standing stones arranged in an oval shape. This complex dates from around 5000 BC, two thousand years older than the Stonehenge. Also, it is one of the largest megalithic sites in Europe.
Some say that this kind of structures is the first mankind public monuments. And one of the most important in the world.
The archaeological place it’s a complex of megalithic structures organized in a circular pattern. It is very well preserved and perfectly positioned to celebrate the solstice. This cromlechs and menhir stones are astronomically and geometrically aligned. And belong to the megalithic universe of Évora. Visitors can walk around the entire site and even touch the stones in a field of olive and cork trees.
