Évora, European Capital of Culture
Évora and the Alentejo receive the title of European Capital of Culture, representing Portugal at Europe’s largest cultural event and marking the beginning of a full year of cultural programming that will transform the city and region into a landmark destination for visitors from across Europe and the world. This is the fourth time a Portuguese city has received the title, following Lisbon, Porto and Guimarães – a distinction that places Évora at the centre of European cultural attention for twelve consecutive months.
The Concept: Vagar (slow living)
At the heart of Évora’s candidacy is the concept of “vagar” – rooted in the cultural identity of the Alentejo, seen through a new, multifaceted and reinterpreted lens. A distinctly Alentejano expression that calls for reflection on the need for European citizens to embrace a slower philosophy of life. Built around three thematic threads – Time, Space and Matter – the cultural and artistic programme of Évora 2027 brings together art and science, artists and audiences, the local and the global.
A Full Year of Cultural Programming
Évora will be the European Capital of Culture throughout the entire year of 2027. Over those twelve months, the city and region will host an extensive cultural programme, with events suited to every season. Exhibitions, concerts, art installations, performances, conferences, artist residencies and community participation projects spread across Évora and the wider Alentejo Central region, with a special focus on the megalithic sites, estates and historic spaces that make this territory truly unique. The city’s monuments remain essential stops – the Roman Temple, the Cathedral, the Chapel of Bones and the leading museums – but woven into a fuller experience that combines the cultural events of Évora 2027 with gastronomy, wine tourism and the discovery of the surrounding landscape.
Évora and the Alentejo – A Unique Destination
Évora is one of the best-preserved cities on the Iberian Peninsula, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The historic centre is compact and walkable, punctuated by Roman monuments, Manueline churches and civil architecture that has remained virtually intact across the centuries. Around it, the Alentejo offers one of Portugal’s most distinctive landscapes – golden plains, cork oak forests, vineyards and estates that blend tradition and modernity. The European Capital of Culture 2027 is the opportunity to discover this territory with an internationally scaled cultural programme as its backdrop.
