Santa Justa Lift in Lisbon

The Santa Justa is a 19th-century lift that goes up through steep hill from Baixa to Largo do Carmo and the ruins of Carmo church. This amazing structure, right in the heart of Lisbon’s downtown, was built in 1902, by the French architect Raoul du Ponsard – from the Gustave Eiffel School, explaining some similarities with the Eiffel Tower. The structure is adorned with glorious neo-gothic arches and geometric patterns, while inside two sumptuous polished wood carriages take passengers up in style. At the top of the elevator there is a viewpoint, and although is not the highest of Lisbon, it provides unrivalled views over the Baixa district and up to the castle. The viewing platform is also highly recommended to visit at night, is one of the most romantic locations in the city. Almost since its construction, Santa Justa Lift has become a tourist attraction, amongst others, as Elevador da Glória or Elevador da Bica.
