In this private Estrela Basilica tour, you’ll discover a huge church with an impressively beautiful dome. Queen Maria I vowed to build this basilica after the birth of her son, Prince José, and once she ascended the throne, construction began in 1779, reaching completion in 1790.
This neoclassical, late-Baroque 18th-century church, with its sugar-white marble façade, rococo-style dome, and twin bell towers, marks the Lisbon skyline atop one of the city’s seven hills. Inside, intricate multicolored marble floors and walls, paintings by Pompeo Batoni, and a remarkable 500-figure cork nativity scene by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro await visitors. Queen Maria I herself is buried here, in the right transept.
The basilica is one of the main stops of the iconic trams 25 and 28, and when you cross the street, you’ll find the pleasant Estrela Garden, a charming green space perfect for a relaxed stroll after your visit.
