Belém Tower Tour

A Lisbon Icon and Symbol of the Portuguese Discoveries

On your Belém Tower tour, you’ll discover one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks and a lasting symbol of the Age of Discoveries.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is one of the most visited attractions in Lisbon. King Manuel I commissioned the fortress between 1514 and 1520 to defend the mouth of the Tagus River from enemy ships and to serve as a ceremonial gateway for the fleets departing on Portugal’s great maritime voyages. Designed by military architect Francisco de Arruda, the tower blends robust defensive engineering with the ornate detail of Manueline architecture, including carved stone ropes, armillary spheres, and the Cross of the Order of Christ.

Look closely at the western turret and you’ll spot one of the tower’s best-known curiosities: a small carved rhinoceros, inspired by a live Indian rhinoceros gifted to King Manuel I in 1515, making it one of the earliest depictions of the animal in European art.
