Completed in 2007, this striking white stone church was born out of pure necessity. For decades, the historic neo-baroque Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary simply wasn’t large enough to safely or comfortably accommodate the huge numbers of pilgrims arriving in Fátima every year, especially during the major international anniversaries from May to October.
To solve this, the sanctuary commissioned a grand, circular building designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis. Built on the opposite side of the main prayer grounds, the Basilica of the Santíssima Trindade stands as a masterpiece of structural engineering, relying on a completely open interior span with absolutely no columns blocking the view of the altar.
Its sharp, contemporary design offers a stark but beautiful contrast to the older monuments in the complex. Before you even step inside, the exterior features works by world-renowned artists. Right at the main entrance, you will find a large, suspended steel net sculpture that catches the natural light, evoking the figures of the Angel of Peace and the shepherd children. This art piece serves as a powerful, open invitation to enter the massive building.
Once inside, the minimalist use of space, natural lighting, and Portuguese marble creates an atmosphere that is both incredibly grand and deeply peaceful, holding over 8,600 seated fiéis. The altar wall is covered in a spectacular gold leaf mosaic created by Slovenian artist Marko Ivan Rupnik, which draws your eye the moment you walk through the doors.
